FULL-TIME: REBELS 15-25 HURRICANES
So, so close after a super inside step and offload from Woodward. But it's come to nothing as Hegarty's pass goes forward. Too little, too late. Scrum 'Canes on their own line with 20 seconds left. It's been an exciting game despite a plethora of penalties, but the Rebels have fallen short once more.
Scrum penalty, taken quickly by Hegarty and off the go again into the 22.
The 'Canes knock-on just inside Rebels territory. Smith is re-entering the fray now, and the Rebels must score within the next minute.
But they concede the penalty! Ten metres out, the 'Canes can clear. That will surely be that with five to go.
Here come the Rebels again, roared on by a rejuvinated AAMI Park. They're into the 22 after a super Neville break.
Woodward slices wildly wide of the mark, it's a ten-point game. Bad miss, and a big miss from the full-back who hasn't impressed off the tee today.
TRY, REBELS, ELLISON! 15-25 Better late than never, the Rebels have that lifeline.
The scrum is an awful mess, somehow the Rebels rescue possession and drive for the line anew. Ellison is over! It looks good! TMO will confirm...
Held up. Scrum-five Rebels. The try simply has to come if they are to pull this one from the fire.
Great tackle from Julian Savea on Woodward as the Rebels press and press again. We're going to check with the TMO as Higginbotham burrowed his way over. Looked like a possible accidental offside.
Yet. Another. Penalty. O'Brien is true to his word, and it is captain Smith himself who goes to the bin. He was offside.
Into the corner it goes. This needs to end with seven points...
Penalty again as the maul is collapsed. O'Brien this time warns Smith about his side's discipline.
Rebels back on the ball, another penalty in front of the posts. Fifteen minutes to play, the call is corner.
It's all in vain as Woodward pulls his kick wide. A waste from the Rebels.
But the Rebels have another penalty, and this time Higginbotham wants three points to cut the deficit to within two tries. It's Woodward from around 45 metres.
Oh, what a steal from Victor Vito with the Rebels threatening! Burgess makes the initial break, taken on by McMahon, and the sevens specialist was there to pinch.
Penalty Rebels on the 'Canes 10m line. Hegarty punts into the visitors' 22. They need to score.
CONVERSION, HURRICANES, BARRETT! 10-25 Barrett back on form with the boot. That's a three-score margin now. Game over?
TRY, HURRICANES, SMITH! 10-23 A simply stunning try from the 'Canes! It started with Taylor, who gathered, dummied the kick and broke 40 metres downfield. He stayed on his feet, fed to Perenara, and Barrett with a perfect cross-kick to Jane with the defence stretched. The All Black kept his cool and Smith was there to flop over on the inside just metres from the line. Brilliant stuff.
Ironic cheers from the Rebels fans as they win a scrum penalty. The count standing at 6-1 against them in this second period.
What a chance for the 'Canes! Good defence from the Rebels just five metres out, and the pass from Julian Savea is behind captain Smith in the corner. If he gathers, he scores. He didn't. Rebels lineout.
And a penalty once more to the visitors. O'Brien brings in Higginbotham for a chat as the count rises and rises again. The home crowd are enraged, Barrett this time goes to the corner. A try here would make life very, very tricky for the hosts.
Well, the Rebels attack well, but Lam wins a penalty for holding on. Barrett quickly aims for the corner, but it's kept in by Sau and Higginbotham slices clear on the 22.
PENALTY, HURRICANES, BARRETT! 10-18 This time, he makes no mistake. Sixth successful goal from Barrett, and it's a two-score cushion for the 'Canes.
Here come the 'Canes again, though. It's yet another penalty, this time right in front of the posts in the home 22. Smith points to the uprights and is less than impressed that no yellow card follows this umpteenth infringement from the hosts. Good attack once again from the visitors.
Another miss from Barrett, very uncharacteristic. Pushes it wide.
Another penalty to the 'Canes - Thrush is calling for Smith to go for the corner, but the skipper instructs his pivot to kick at goal once again. Chance to atone for that miss two minutes ago.
Barrett hits the post, missing his first kick in 11 attempts. The 'Canes are a little disappointed O'Brien isn't letting the advantage play out a touch longer.
'Canes win a rather dubious free-kick at the scrum for an early drive, and they breach the 22 once more. Penalty yet again. Barrett yet again.
Savea rumbles his way over two tacklers from first-receiver off that scrum, but the ball slips from his grasp.
Good kick-chase from the 'Canes and Hegarty spills under pressure from Savea Snr. Scrum to the visitors.
PENALTY, HURRICANES, BARRETT! 10-15 Perfect five for the Kiwi pivot. 'Canes extend their lead.
Great play from Goodes who gets himself over the ball. Busy showing so far from the loosehead. Penalty chance for Barrett again.
Woodward gets us going once again. Two points in it.
Teams back out here in Melbourne. Standby for a full-blooded second half!
The stats at the break tell us both teams have conceded two turnovers at the breakdown, while the Rebels are breaching the gain-line nearly 90% of the time versus the 'Canes 75%. It's the visitors' six handling errors that have prevented them finishing off their chances.
HALF-TIME: REBELS 10-12 HURRICANES
He's well short, and Barrett boots it out to end the half. Entertaining first forty, anyone's game right now.
There's the hooter, the Rebels have the penalty and Jason Woodward is going to attempt as astonishingly long shot at goal. Nearly 60 metres. Has he got the legs?
End-to-end stuff as the half draws to a close, great interplay from both teams as the match begins to open up.
Rebels exit well as Ellison makes ground and Woodward drills clear.
Fantastic take in the air from Jane, and Smith's kick bobbles into touch deep in the Rebels 22. They're under pressure, but they win the scrum.
PENALTY, HURRICANES, BARRETT! 10-12 Entertaining first half, five minutes to go as the 'Canes edge ahead once more.
Chances opening up for the visitors now, though. Great offloading from Broadhurst first allows Goodes to barrel through midfield, before Savea is hauled to ground in the corner. Penalty 'Canes, and Barrett will surely boot them back into the lead.
Ellison puts boot to ball and grubbers through into the 'Canes half. They'll have the lineout.
Scrum Rebels on the 22 as they stop the 'Canes again. Looking good in defence so far.
CONVERSION, REBELS, WOODWARD! 10-9
TRY, REBELS, HEGARTY! 8-9 From nothing, the Rebels score a wonderful try! Woodward the architect as he cuts through midfield, chips ahead, and though the bounce evaded him, the fly-half was there to gather and go under the sticks unchallenged. Super try.
Scrum penalty once again to the Rebels, who are acquitting themselves well at the set-piece so far.
That was a real chance for the 'Canes as Barrett scythes through the gap in the Rebels 22, but can't release the men outside him who were queuing up to score. Perenara spills and the Rebels have the scrum and a chance to clear.
Leafa enjoying a very busy opening quarter in Melbourne, he's over the ball again. 'Canes have the scrum from that failed maul, though, as it was from a kick.
PENALTY, REBELS, WOODWARD! 3-9 Woodward on target this time, and the Rebels get off the mark.
And they'll have a straightforward shot at goal on the 22.
Now things opening up a tad as Jane attacks, loses the ball in contact and the Rebels coming roaring downfield through Hegarty and Sau. They're in attack 30 metres out.
Hopeless restart from Woodward that makes about five metres, and a super attacking platform for the 'Canes' backline with a scrum on halfway.
PENALTY, HURRICANES, BARRETT! 0-9 Three from three for Barrett, 'Canes playing well without threatening too much yet.
Another kickable penalty for Barrett on the 10m line as Ellison fails to release Savea Snr before stealing the ball. Clear penalty, and a chance for 0-9 after 18 minutes.
Woodward on the attack this time, but his offload is poor under pressure and the 'Canes win the lineout just outside their own 22. They've got a penalty too as Neville takes Vito in the air.
Super steal from the 'Canes this time, just as the Rebels looked to mount their first real attack of the match. Ellison powered into the 22, but he was turned over and the visitors clear for now.
Well defended, Rebels. Leiua caught behind the gainline inside his own half, Leafa in over the ball and the hosts win their second scrum of the match.
PENALTY, HURRICANES, BARRETT! 0-6 No problem for the All Blacks pivot. Decent start for the Hurricanes in Melbourne.
Super counter-ruck has the 'Canes back on the ball outside the home 22, and they win the penalty right in front of the posts. Beginning to hit their stride in attack, the visitors.
Oops, he's miscued that one and pushed it past the right upright. 'Canes with the quick dropout and Julian Savea makes an acrobatic take. The ball's out and the visitors have a lineout just outside their own 22.
Scrum penalty to the Rebels, up steps Woodward.
Better defence from the Rebels as the 'Canes try to attack from deep again. Ellison sacks Perenara and the hosts win a scrum just outside the 22.
PENALTY, HURRICANES, BARRETT! 0-3 In the words of the late, great Bill McLaren, Barrett's kick was a little bit inebriated, but it got there. 'Canes on the board
They remain patient, and Matt O'Brien awards the penalty. Barrett lines it up from nearly 50 metres looking to open the scores.
The 'Canes going through the phases on halfway and reach double figures. Not much ground made as yet.
Beauden Barrett has us underway in Melbourne.
Here come the teams! Kick-off moments away!
Ardie Savea wins a rare start in the number seven jersey for the visitors, with Ben Franks shifting to tighthead and Reggie Goodes wearing number one in the changes up front. Jeffrey Toomaga-Allen is benched, but the backline remains lethal with Beauden Barrett, Julian Savea and the flying Alapati Leiua all starting.
Just the one change for the Rebels who lost to the Sharks on this ground last time out, and it comes at hooker as Pat Leafa replaces Shota Horie. Nick Stirzaker is injured, and is ruled out, with Ben Meehan taking his spot on the bench.
