Melbourne Rebels 22 Western Force 16
CONVERSION, WESTERN FORCE, HOLMES! 22-16. Zac holmes adds the extras which at least secures his side a bonus-point for losing by less than seven points. That''s also the final act of the half and the hosts are victorious! The Rebels have ended the Force''s five-match winning streak. The hosts took control of the match in the second half andd hardly gave the visitors a sniff after the interval. The Force will be disappointed as the game was there for the taking, but, in the end, their opponents were just a little hungrier.
TRY, WESTERN FORCE, CUMMINS! 22-14. Nick Cummins runs onto a pass from Godwin and gets in under the posts which will make the conversion kick a formality.
YELLOW CARD, REBELS, ELLISON! Tamati Ellison receives his marching orders after failing to release a tackled player in front of his try-line.
Several Rebels forwards are pinged for an indiscretion at a ruck. Zac Holmes puts the ball out 10 metres from the home side's try-line where the Force launch a drive.
PENALTY, REBELS, WOODWARD! 22-9. Woodward gives the hosts a 13-point lead after Hodgson is pinged for tackling Pat Leafa in the air.
The Force take the ball through several phases as they try to get something out of this match! Stander, Hodgson and McCalman carry well but they soon lose possession when Kyle Godwin knocks on after taking a massive hit from Sean McMahon!
The Rebels are attack inside the Force's 22. After taking the ball through several phases, Hegarty stabs a grubber kick through for Male Sau to chase! It's too long, however, and the ball rolls over the dead-ball line.
Woodward gets a chance to push his side further in front from the kicking tee. This after Brynard Stander fails to release a tackled player on the ground. Woodward's effort is to the left of the uprights, however.
Ben McCalamn is penalised for playing Higginbotham in the air at a line-out. Woodward puts the ball into touch, five metres outside the Force's 22.
CONVERSION, REBELS, WOODWARD! 19-9. Woodward makes no mistake from the kicking tee, to give his side a 10-point lead!
TRY, REBELS, HIGGINBOTHAM! 17-9. Higginbotham gathers the ball at the back of a scrum, on the Force's five-metre line, and bursts through tackles from Prior and Ebersohn before crashing over!
Woodward runs onto a pass from Luke Burgess and is soon close to the Force's 22! He kicks ahead but Pat Dellitt gathers under great pressure from several of the home side's backs.
PENALTY, REBELS, WOODWARD! 12-9. Woodward slots a place-kick, from about 45 metres out, after Longbottom is pinged, again, for dropping his bind at a scrum.
There have been several reset scrums and the Force have been at fault on several occasions. Referee Lees is keeping a close eye on proceedings but one gets the feeling that it's not the last time he'll be penalising the front rows.
PENALTY, WESTERN FORCE, EBERSOHN! 9-9. Ebersohn adds another three-pointer after Colby Fainga'a is pinged for a ruck infringement.
Haylett-Petty chips ahead inside the Rebels' 22! He fails to regather but Brache does, and offloads to Hodgosn, who is stopped just shortly of the line by Tamati Ellison!
PENALTY, REBELS, WOODWARD! 9-6. Jason Woodward puts the hosts in front, for the first time, after Matt Hodgson is pinged for a ruck infringement.
Hegarty gets the second half started with a short, hanging kick which Brache gathers in the air before coming down just outside his 10-metre line, where he sets up a ruck.
Melbourne Rebels 6 Western Force 6
The Rebels attack from a scrum, inside the Force's 22. They set up a couple of phases until Fulgistaller knocks on. That's the final act of the half as referee Andrew Lees blows his whistle to indicate half-time shortly afterwards. As the scoreline suggests it's been an even battle and both sides will have to improve on attack, in the second half, if they want to be victorious.
The Rebels are under pressure, at a scrum inside their 22, but Higginbotham does well to pick up-and-go before going to ground 10 metres outside his quarter. The ball is spun wide where Tom English is bundled into touch, on the halfway line, by Dane Haylett-Petty.
Woodward has another shot at goal, after several force players go off their feet at a ruck. His effort is well of target, however.
Higginbotham carries forcefully but gets knocked backwards in the tackle after taking a big hit from Nathan Charles!
This time it's Pek Cowan who is penalised for illegal scrummaging. Bryce Hegarty puts the ball out on the visitors' 10-metre line.
PENALTY, REBELS, WOODWARD. 6-6. Woodward adds another three-pointer after Kieran Longbottom is penalised for illegal scrummaging.
Toby Smith takes the ball into contact but is held up after taking a huge hit from Marcel Brache. When the maul becomes static, the Force are awarded the put in at the scrum.
The Rebels attack inside the Force's 22 but lose possession when Shota Horie is pinged for obstruction at a ruck. Ebersohn kicks for touch and puts the ball out on his 10-metre line.
PENALTY, WESTERN FORCE, EBERSOHN! 3-6. Ebersohn adds another three-pointer after Colby Fainga'a is pinged for going off his feet at a ruck.
Ebersohn has just executed a shocking drop-goal attempt! From about 45 metres out he takes the snap-shot, while still on the run, and his effort travels for about 10 metres in the air, before rolling over the Rebels' dead-ball line!
PENALTY, REBELS, WOODWARD! 3-3. Jason Woodward draws the hosts level after Patrick Dellit is blown up for obstruction.
The Rebels attack with their forwards but Scott Fuglistaller knocks on in contact which allows the Force to launch a counter-attack from inside their 22.
The Force are awarded the put-in at a scrum, after Higginbotham knocks on, but the Rebels do well to win a tighthead and are soon on the attack close to he visitors' 22.
PENALTY, WESTERN FORCE, EBERSOHN! 0-3. Ebersohn gets the game's first points, from the kicking tee, after Scott Higginbotham is pinged for offside play.
The Force show great continuity as their forwards launch a drive. They do well to take it to just outside the Rebels 22 before the hosts do well to halt their progress.
Sias Ebersohn gets us started with a deep kick which Nic Stirzaker gathers inside his 22. He clears his line with a kick which goes into touch on the halfway mark.
Rebels head coach Tony McGahan has made one change to the team that lost to the Chiefs in Hamilton last weekend. In a show of faith in his matchday 23, that lone change sees second rower Cadeyrn Neville replace Hugh Pyle in the starting lineup, with Pyle dropping to the bench.
Lock Adam Coleman and scrum-half Ian Prior will make their run-on debuts for the Western Force in this match. Wing Patrick Dellit makes his return to the Western Force's back three, joining full-back Dane Haylett-Petty and Nick Cummins. The trio replace Sam Wykes (ribs), Alby Mathewson (ankle) and Luke Morahan (hamstring), who have been ruled through injury. Meanwhile, scrum-half Justin Turner is in line to make his first appearance for the Western Force since the corresponding match in 2012. Lock Phoenix Battye, who is capped 11 times for the Western Australian franchise, earns his first appearance on the Force bench for 2014.
