CHIEFS 17-33 WARATAHS
CONVERSION, FOLEY. 17-33. The 'Tahs fly-half maintains his perfect record from the tee to cap an excellent win. That's full time, thanks for joining us, cheers!
TRY, WARATAHS, FOLEY! 17-31. That's the win! Foley's momentum takes him over the line after a good pass from Beale to put a final nail in the Chiefs' coffin!
The Tahs keep it tight, hammering away inside the Chiefs 22. The Chiefs need to get their hands on the ball.
Foley finds a crucial touch deep in the Chiefs' half from a penalty - earned by Ashley-Cooper - to keep the hosts pinned back.
CONVERSION, FOLEY. 17-26. Hard to see the Chiefs winning it from here. But if anyone can steal it at the death, its the Chiefs!
TRY, WARATAHS, DENNIS! 17-24. Is that the ballgame? A crucial try from the skipper, who hands off Pauliasi Manu to break clear and score!
Big defense from the Waratahs as the Chiefs are pushed backwards. Nanai-Williams makes good ground but the Waratahs are committing numbers to the breakdown to secure possession, which they do. Foley finds touch from a penalty.
PENALTY, WARATAHS, FOLEY. 17-19. Tanerau Latimer is penalised for not rolling away. Foley hits the target from 30m out, straight in front, to put the visitors back in front.
Waratahs have a go at but the ball is very messy for them. The visitors keep punching up with the forwards but the ball is very slow, eventually it goes wide to Alofa who offloads to Hooper who is bunddled into touch.
CONVERSION, CRUDEN. 17-16. The Chiefs take the lead for the first time since the 9th minute!
TRY, CHIEFS, AKI. 15-16. Messam turns down three easy points as he takes a quick penalty. It goes wide and Marshall grubbers through for Aki, who pounces for his second try!
It's anyone's game as we enter the final quarter. The Chiefs are doing a better job of keeping possession. They probe on the edge of the Waratahs 22.
PENALTY, WARATAHS, BEALE. 10-16. Waratahs strike straight back after the try as Beale steps up to slot a long-range penalty.
CONVERSION, CRUDEN. 10-13. Easy extras...
TRY, CHIEFS, AKI! 8-13. The Chiefs are lucky to be awarded that try...a Tahs knock-on give the hosts a 5m scrum. Aki is offside when he starts his chase of a Cruden chip through. He doesn't control it as he touches down but the TMO reckons his belly flop is good enough!
Horrible mistake from Nathan Harris, who doesn't throw straight at the line-out. The Chiefs chose not to take the three points so they needed to make that line-out count.
A lot of time is wasted with reset scrums. Eventually the ball goes wide to Sweeney, who breaks and makes 60m! The Waratahs give up the penalty on their 22...Cruden goes for touch.
Good defence from the Chiefs, who are fronting up in the second half. Phipps spills the ball so the Chiefs will feed a scrum just outside their 22.
The Waratahs set up an attacking line-out from a penalty. But the throw is a bad one, the Chiefs grab it, but Kerr-Barlow kicks it out on the full after it was passed back into the 22. The Tahs will get a second chance at the line-out.
Skelton is penalised for being offside at a ruck after a break from Retallick. Cruden opts for a shot at goal but hits the post!
Jacques Potgieter is off. Will Skelton joins the Tahs second row.
Great work from big Ben Tameifuna on the deck, forcing the penalty as the Tahs hang on in the Chiefs 22. Cruden clears.
Here we go for round two as Foley kicks us off. Cruden replies but doesn't find touch, so the Waratahs will have the first chance to attack.
CHIEFS 3-13 WARATAHS
The Chiefs build steadily up into the Waratahs 22 by keeping it tight, picking a driving. The move comes to end though with a collapsed maul. That's half time! The scoreline is probably a fair reflection of the game. The Chiefs have a tough task in the second half if they want to keep their title defence alive.
Ouch! Matt Symons gets an accidental knee to the head from Wycliff Palu causing a break in play. The Waratahs defence is giving the Chiefs absolutely no room for manoeuvre here.
Folau knocks on under pressure just inside his own half. The Chiefs will have a rare opportunity to execute a set piece move inside opposition territory.
The game is starting to open up a little, which will probably work in the Chiefs' favour. Ashley-Cooper chips ahead but is taken out by Retallick as he chases. That should be a penalty at least...but none of the officials spot it and wave play on.
The Waratahs have enjoyed 63% of the territory! They have a scrum just inside their own half after Cruden is able to clear after the previous attack.
BOOM! Tameifuna nails Hooper. What a hit! But the Waratahs keep coming on the edge of the Chiefs 22.
PENALTY, WARATAHS, FOLEY. 3-13. Messam penalised for coming into a maul from the side.
Good recovery from the Chiefs'' scrum but they give the penalty away at the next ruck for going off their feet. This time the Tahs set up the 5m line-out.
Nathan Harris is off for a concussion test so Mahonri Schwalger is on. The Chiefs scrum is shoved back, Mackintosh under pressure. Penalty to the Tahs! They choose another scrum!
Adam Ashley-Cooper makes a try down the left touchline, chipping and chasing. A Chiefs knock on give the Tahs a scrum 10m out.
Two minutes with the Chiefs in possession but they've lost 30-odd metres against the excellent Waratahs defence. The Chiefs eventually get a penalty in their own half but Cruden misses touch! The Tahs counter...
The Waratahs are running the show at the moment, plying the pressure of defence and looking slick on attack. All the stats are in the visitors' favour for now.
CONVERSION, FOLEY. 3-10. Excellent conversion from the touchline.
TRY, WARATAHS, FOLAU! 3-8. Brilliant! Sensational play from the Waratahs as Ashley-Cooper breaks the line before offloading to Israel Folau, who races down the touchline to score try number 11 for the season!
NO try! The Waratahs give away a penalty in fact for taking the defender out on the side of the ruck that gave Phipps the space to get away.
Nick Phipps finds Alofa Alofa out wide and the wings races home to score! Hang on! We're going back to the TMO...
The Waratahs looking very good with ball in hand, very fluid. They build in midfield, spreading it from side to side.
PENALTY, WARATAHS, FOLEY. 3-3. We're all square after another breakdown penalty against the hosts. It's all a bit scrappy early on with a lot of errors on the deck.
Marshall makes a half break. Tameifuna is up in support but has the ball riped off him. The Chiefs try recover with their hands on the deck. Penalty! Foley clears.
The Waratahs look good with their first attack after they turn the ball over through Potgieter. It is slow ball in the Chiefs 22 after a few phases. In the end it is another Chiefs penalty for the Tahs holding on. Cruden clears.
PENALTY, CHIEFS, CRUDEN. 3-0. The Waratahs make a hash of their exit as Palu is penalised for taking the man off the ball . Cruden gets an easy penalty to open his account.
Here we go! Bring the noise....Aaron Cruden kicks us off. He goes high and long. The Chiefs get there! But Asaeli Tikoirotuma knocks it on. Scrum to the 'Tahs just outside their own 22.
Waratahs coach Michael Cheika has named the same team that defeated the Melbourne Rebels last week.
Chiefs head coach Dave Rennie has given his starting XV a major reshuffle with no less than eight changes. Jamie Mackintosh starts at prop and Matt Symons at lock. Liam Messam reclaims his six jersey, while Liam Squire starts at number eight. Aaron Cruden starts the match at fly-half, Andrew Horrell comes in at inside centre and Tim Nanai-Williams moves to centre.
Hello and welcome to our coverage of today's first Super Rugby clash from Yarrow Stadium in New Plymouth. It's set to be a massively influential game because the Chiefs desperately need a positive result. The Waratahs look like genuine title contenders so it should be a cracker!
