Chiefs 24 Hurricanes 16
The Chiefs attack and Nanai-Williams takes the ball into contact, close to the Hurricanes' 22! He is tackled by Jane, who knocks on in the process and referee Nick Briant blows his whistle to bring proceedings to a close. It was a hard-fought affair but the Chiefs are deserved winners as they dominated for large periods. The 'Canes fought a good fight but in the end they came up short. That's their final match of the season and, once again, they miss out narrowly on the play-offs. The defending champions are still in with a shout but must win their final match, against the Blues, next weekend.
Thrush holds onto the ball on the ground and is penalised for his indiscretion. Cruden kicks for touch and puts the ball out on the Hurricanes' 10-metre line.
Barrett gets a chance to reduce the gap, from the kicking tee, after the Chiefs infringe on defence. His kick is just to the right of the target, however.
Bundee Aki is penalised for holding onto the ball on the ground. Barrett kicks for touch and puts the ball out on the Chiefs' 10-metre line.
Cruden has another shot at goal, after Ash Dixon is penalised for holding onto the ball on the ground. The kick has the distance but is to the left of the uprights.
Retallick does brilliantly when he wins a turnover at a ruck, close to the 'Canes' 22. His efforts all come to nothing though as he is dispossessed by Cory Jane soon afterwards.
CONVERSION, HURRICANES, BARRETT. 24-16. Barrett narrows the gap to eigh points with the easy two-pointer.
TRY, HURRICANES, PARKES! 24-14. Hadleigh Parkes runs onto a crash-ball and breakes through two tackles before scoring next to the uprights!
Cruden has missed the conversion but from the restart, Retallick knocks on and the 'Canes get a chance to strike back from a scrum, just outside the Chiefs' 22.
TRY, CHIEFS, RETALLICK! 24-9. Cruden beats a couple of defenders, and when he is stopped deep inside the 'Canes' 22, he throws a long pass to Brodie Retallick, who gets in at the left-hand corner despite the attentions of two defenders!
PENALTY, CHIEFS, CRUDEN! 19-9. Cruden restores the hosts' 10-point lead after the Hurricanes forwards are pinged for illegally collapsing a maul.
The Chiefs attack deep inside the Hurricanes' 22 and Tom Marshall makes a dash for the line! He goes over but has the ball knocked from his grasp by Barrett!
Cruden weaves his way past four players and is eventually stopped five metres from the Hurricanes' try-line! The ball goes out wide but Nanai-Williams stabs a grubber kick through which rolls over the dead-ball line.
Barrett has a shot at goal, after Charlie Ngatai is penalised for not rolling away after making a tackle on Toomaga-Allen. Barrett's effort is a poor one and falls well short of the cross-bar.
Nanai-Williams sets off on attack and throws an inside pass to Messam who knocks on!
PENALTY, HURRICANES, BARRETT. 16-9. Barrett gets the first points of the half after Jamie Mackintosh is pinged for a high tackle on Dane Coles.
Ardie Savea attacks the line and hands off Tim Nanai-Williams! He's inside the 'Canes' half and throws a pass to his brother Julian but over-cooks it and the ball goes into touch!
Cruden gets the second half underway with a deep kick which Lam spills! Chiefs on the attack with a scrum inside the Hurricanes' 22.
Chiefs 16 Hurricanes 6
PENALTY, CHIEFS, CRUDEN. 16-6. Cruden restores the home side's 10-point lead after the 'Canes are pinged for being offside. The penalty is also the final act of the half and the sides head into the sheds for half-time. The hosts have shown greater intensity on the attack and deserve their current lead. The Hurricanes will have to up the ante, after half-time, if they want to salvage something from this game.
PENALTY, CHIEFS, CRUDEN. 13-3. Cruden knocks over another two-pointer after the visitors are pinged for offside play.
Cruden gets his side onto the attack with a cross-field kick which goes out on the Hurricanes' 22-metre line.
PENALTY, HURRICANES, BARRETT. 10-6. Barrett narrows the gap to four points, from the kicking tee, after a Chiefs infringement at a ruck.
CONVERSION, CHIEFS, CRUDEN. 10-3. Cruden adds the extras to extend the home side's lead.
TRY, CHIEFS, MACKINTOSH! 8-3. The Chiefs go on a drive close to the 'Canes' try-line and when the maul becomes static, they pick-up-and-go. Jamie Mackintosh spots a gap close to the line and barges over!
Thrush is penalised a gain for illegal play at a ruck inside his half. Cruden kicks for touch and puts the ball out on the Hurricanes' five-metre line.
PENALTY, HURRICANES, BARRETT! 3-3. Barrett draws his side level after the Chiefs' forwards infringe at a ruck.
PENALTY, CHIEFS, CRUDEN. 3-0. Cruden puts the hosts in front after Jeffery Toomaga-Allen is penalised for a ruck infringement.
The Chiefs go on the drive, inside the Hurricanes' half, before Mike Fitzgerald takes it up. He makes little headway as Brad Shields and Jack Lam combine to knock him backwards in the tackle!
The Chiefs attack, from deep inside their half, but lose possession when Cruden kicks ahead but then knocks on as he tries to regather.
The Hurricanes take the ball through several phases, close to the Chiefs' try-line, but they can't break down the hosts' defence. Jeremy Thrush is eventually penalised when he holds onto the ball on the ground.
TJ Perenara spots a gap behind the Chiefs' defence and kicks ahead! Liam Messam is back to cover and gathers but is forced to carry over as Perenara and Julian Savea close down the space in front of his try-line.
Cruden gets a chance to open the scoring, from the kicking tee, after Ben Franks is pinged for an early tackle on Liam Squire. Cruden strikes it well but it's off target.
The Chiefs are on the attack close to the 'Canes' try-line but lose possession when Charlie Ngatai knocks on a pass from Brodie Retallick.
Julian Savea launches a bomb, close to the halfway mark. Tim Bateman goes up for it but knocks on.
And we're off! Beauden Barrett gets us underway with a deep kick which Asaeli Tikoirotuma gathers inside his 22. He sets off on a run but is brought to ground by several Hurricanes forwards, just outside his 22-metre line.
The Hurricanes have been forced into at least two changes to their starting side. Injuries to Alapati Leiua and Victor Vito in last Saturday's home win over the Crusaders means Hadleigh Parkes starts at inside centre, while Brad Shields moves to the back of the scrum. Lock Jeremy Thrush will continue to captain the side in the absence of Conrad Smith (broken thumb).
Chiefs coach Dave Rennie has rung the changes to his backline again. The defending champions will attempt to save their season with a brand new backline as Aaron Cruden is the only back to retain his place in the starting XV after last week's 29-25 loss against the Highlanders. Tawera Kerr-Barlow starts at scrum-half, replacing Augustine Pulu, while Charlie Ngatai and Tim Nanai-Williams are in the midfield. Asaeli Tikoirotuma and James Lowe start on the wings with Tom Marshall at full-back. This encounter is expected to be the Chiefs' last home game for the season and will mark the official farewell for Tanerau Latimer, Asaeli Tikoirotuma, Bundee Aki and Mils Muliaina who are all heading off shore to continue their careers. Rhys Marshall comes onto the bench and is joined by Nick Barrett who has the chance to make his Super Rugby debut with Josh Hohneck out with a broken thumb. Augustine Pulu, Gareth Anscombe and Bundee Aki all move to the reserves.
